Kaylee Chalfant is a studio potter based in Ferndale, Washington, whose work is deeply rooted in the landscapes and textures of the Pacific Northwest. She specializes in wheel-thrown, functional ceramics, creating pieces designed to enrich everyday life through both form and function.
Her work primarily explores sgraffito—a technique derived from the Italian word for “to scratch”—in which layered surfaces are meticulously incised to reveal contrasting colors beneath. This method allows Kaylee to infuse her functional pottery with intricate, tactile designs that invite interaction and contemplation.
Kaylee’s passion for ceramics began in high school, leading her to pursue a BA in Studio Art with a concentration in ceramics from Western Washington University, where she graduated in 2024. She also earned a minor in Arts Enterprise & Cultural Innovation (AECI) and served as the Student Liaison on the board of Whatcom Artists of Clay & Kiln (WACK) from 2023–2025.
She produces her work at Starflower Studios, a collaborative arts space in the Downtown Bellingham Arts District, and her pieces are represented by Good Earth Pottery, both in-gallery and online.
Inspired by her childhood in the Pacific Northwest countryside, Kaylee draws on the region’s natural beauty to inform the forms, textures, and motifs of her pottery. In addition to her studio practice, she engages with her local arts community as an employee at Good Earth Pottery and a barista at a nearby coffee stand, grounding her artistic work in everyday life and connection.
